As the Houston Dynamo walk onto the field on September 29 to take on the San Jose Earthquakes, the team will walk hand-in-hand with 11 superheroes as we celebrate Soccer Kicks Cancer Night at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Eleven child cancer patients will lead the team out sporting custom-made superhero capes, made in conjunction with Coming Up Rosies, an organization that donates customizable head and neck scarves and art kits to hospitals and charity organizations.
Kids and Dynamo players created their own custom cape designs, filled with images that make the wearer feel like a superhero.
"I was watching Game of Thrones when I had my poster to draw the cape, so what better superhero than an entire show filled with superheroes?" Dylan Remick said of his cape.
Jared Watts went for a simpler design "because of my artistic abilities" or lack thereof, he said. "I looked at the Dynamo crest a little bit and used the star, black and orange. That was my inspiration."
"It was awesome for [the kids] to be able to come out, and you get to see their capes that they got to design themselves and their excitement," Watts said of meeting a few of the kids. "It was fun just being able to see the joy they have and being able to hang out with them."
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and during the month MLS "goes gold" to Kick Childhood Cancer. MLS Kick Childhood Cancer games include gold-themed corner flags and goal nets, gold captain’s armbands and commemorative jersey patches. Additionally, for every post on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #ScarvesUp, MLS WORKS will donate $5 to Children's Oncology Group.

Roger is two years old from Idbael, Oklahoma. Roger was born with a rare liver disease called binary atresia. He has had two surgeries, including a recent liver transplant. Roger met a few Dynamo players while he stayed at the Ronald McDonald House and spent time playing with midfielder Tomás Martínez. Roger loves playing soccer with his older brother. His favorite TV shows are PJ Masks and Paw Patrol. He loves to play with fire trucks and toy cars that he can ride himself. He's a cheerful and playful child, and would never stop playing if he could help it!
Vaughn was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma brain cancer in April 2016. He endured two brain surgeries, six weeks of brain and spine proton radiation, and four long months of chemotherapy. Vaughn had to re-learn to walk, dress himself and do day-to-day functions. He played soccer and flag football prior to his diagnosis in 2016, but was told he may never play sports again. Today Vaughn is two years cancer free and is back to playing soccer!
Lia will be our Kid Captain for the game, thanks to the Austen Everett Foundation. Lia was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2017. She has been in chemotherapy and in and out of hospitals ever since, but will hopefully be finished with chemotherapy in January 2020. Lia is an energetic six-year-old who loves soccer, basketball, dance and piano.
